WOW North East : International Women's Day
The Hope Brigade North East, the first-ever North East edition of WOW - Women of the World's powerful international photography series, launches this March with an exciting International Women's Day celebration event.
Bringing together photography, live conversation and performance to spotlight extraordinary women and non-binary people from across the region.
Created in partnership with S&DR200, The Hope Brigade North East celebrates individuals working to improve lives in their local communities and beyond. The exhibition features 26 striking photographic portraits by award-winning photographer Joanne Coates ...one for each mile of the Stockton & Darlington Railway each connecting stories of hope, activism and care across the North East.
Joanne Coates is also one of the 100 winners of Portrait of Britain Vol. 8, selected by The British Journal of Photography from thousands of submissions nationwide. The prestigious annual project celebrates the diversity of people living in Britain and brings contemporary portraiture into public spaces across the UK, further cementing Coates' reputation for creating powerful, socially engaged photographic work.
The free exhibition opens on Friday 6 March at Locomotion, before travelling to Newcastle Train Station on 23 March, where it will remain on display until 7 April.
A smaller version of the exhibition will also be shown in Durham City Centre from 6 March, before moving to Middlesbrough on the 20 March ensuring audiences across the region can encounter the work in everyday public spaces.
And to mark International Women's Day on 8 March there will be a special event at Middlesbrough Theatre which will bring together photography, live conversation and performance to spotlight extraordinary women and non-binary people from across the region.
